Gum disease

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is the redness, swelling and infection of the gums, caused by the bacteria in plaque that stick to your teeth.

In the early stages of gum disease most people are symptom free, infact The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) say that 95% of us suffer from gum disease without knowing, however over time this can lead to either gingivitis or periodontitis.

It's important to recognise that gum diease is the biggest cause of tooth loss and is often associated with bad breath or halitosis.

What is gingivitis?

This is inflamation of the gums which can become red and swollen and may even bleed during brushing - the key thing to remember now is that gums which are healthy don't bleed!

What is periodontal disease?

If gum diease, or gingivitis goes untreated the infalamtion and infection can start to work its way down the tooth root under the gums.

If this happens the bone which support and anchor the teeth can also become damaged and start to 'shrink' away leaving the teeth at best loose, and at worse so wobbly and infected that they need to be extracted.

How is gum disease measured?

If your gums are healthy thay will be a light pink colour with no redness and not be puffy or sore - a certainyl not bleeding! They would also be free of plaque or tartar.

As a dentist we can assess your gums on a sliding scale of 0 to 4

0 Excellent healthy gums.

1 Some bleeding, gums are puffy with some redness. This is a sign of early gum disease.

2 Calculus present or there are ledges on crowns/fillings that will cause problems. Gum disease is progessing.

3 We will now 'probe' below the gum line to see if bone is being lost. We will measure this bone loss in millimeters. At this stage if the gum disease is left untreated it could turn in to periodontitis.

4 The bone loss is getting worse and there is some loosening of teeth.

Why should I see a hygienist? Simple they will save your teeth!

Overcoming gum disease

Regular visits to your hygienist will reduce the risk of gum disease, tooth decay and dental plaque build up. They will monitor your dental health and advice on god brushing technique

A hygienist will also pick up gum disease at an early stage, thereby saving you money, time and pain in the future and preventing the gum disease turning in to periodontitis, now that does sound good, doesn't it?
